The program was started by a small group of women that belonged to Women of Words Book Club in 2011. One of the women saw a program on the Today Show about a program in South Carolina that addressed problems of weekend hunger in their school system. A group of 5 women approached one of the school principals in Massena about the need in Massena. He said there was definitely a need.
The women sought permission from the school board, started raising money by presenting a vision to local civic organizations and individuals.
The first distribution in October,2011 was 42 students.Throughout that year, they added other schools one at a time. By the end of the year, Back the Pack had delivered over 4,000 packs to Massena elementary students. Last year, Back the Pack delivered approx. 9,100 packs and are on track to do the same this year.
